Risk assessment is a critical component of Legionella management in the workplace. The risk assessment process involves identifying potential sources of Legionella contamination, evaluating the likelihood of Legionella growth and spread, and assessing the consequence of exposure to Legionella. A thorough risk assessment is essential for implementing appropriate control measures to manage the risks associated with Legionella in the water systems. The risk assessment process begins with the site inspection to identify the water systems present in the building and assess their condition. The inspector will evaluate the potential sources of Legionella such as cooling towers, hot water and cold water systems and air conditioning systems. The inspector will also look for any conditions that may increase the risk of Legionella growth, such as stagnant water or areas of high humidity.

Once the potential sources of Legionella have been identified, the next step is to evaluate the likelihood of Legionella growth and spread, this involves the assessment of factors such as water temperature, water flow and the presence of nutrients that could support the growth of Legionella bacteria. The consequence of exposure to Legionella are also considered in the risk assessment process, this involves the assessment of potential health effects and exposure to Legionella such as legionnaires disease and Pontiac fever.

The assessment will also consider the potential impact of an outbreak of legionaries disease on the reputation of the business and its financial viability. Based on the findings of the risk assessment, appropriate control measures are implemented to manage the risk associated with Legionella. Control measures can include regular water testing and monitoring, disinfecting of water systems, and the implementation of appropriate water treatment measures. Regular reviews of the risk assessment are necessary to ensure the control measures remain effective. This may involve adjustments to the control measures or adding additional monitoring and testing to assess the effectiveness of existing control measures.
